The sheer size and the export-driven characteristics of

With low PC penetration, inadequate telecom infrastructure
and low capita income, getting the Chinese population online poses both
huge upside potential and serious challenges. This panel will explore the
construction and development of Internet backbone (ChinaNet, GBNet) and
the role of which foreign and local telecom companies and telecom equipment/PC
manufacturers play in enabling and providing Internet access. It will .
explore the possibility of the opening up of the Chinese ISP market to
foreign telcos with China. s entry into WTO. We will also discuss the much
talked-about topic of non-PC devices such as cable/satellite TV and cellular
phones as better alternatives for Internet access in China given the low
PC penetration.
