Transition: Exploring China's Path Forward

Saturday, April 12, 2003
Harvard Business School

In the two decades since China embarked on a series of reforms aimed at better integrating itself with the global market economy, the nation has seen spectacular growth that has transformed its landscape and propelled it into the forefront of the world stage. Indeed, China has made impressive strides in expanding its national economic output, raising people's living standards and promoting cultural and economic exchanges. However, sharing the spotlight with China’s tantalizing promises is a disconcerting list of problems that, if left unresolved, could easily bring about international instability rivaling that from the Asian financial crisis. At this time of uncertainty, China faces a series of domestic transitions that could impact the entire international community for many years to come.

Harvard China Review aims to bring together top policy makers, executives and academics from China, the United States and other countries to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing China as a new generation of leaders prepare to bring the country through this crucial transitional stage. The issues to be addressed will include balancing growth, reform, and social stability in the domestic arena while China deals with the challenges of integrating iteself into the global economy.
