Seventh Annual Conference

After two decades of sustained economic reform, China is finally harvesting the fruits of its labor. It has emerged as a new growth engine for regional development and is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. However, rapid economic growth has also brought about a multitude of issues that China must address in order to sustain its forward momentum. Market reforms have surged well ahead while social reforms lag behind, and China must carefully allocate its limited resources in order to balance the growth of the society as a cohesive entity. How can the government maintain a healthy level of intervention in order to correct market failures without jeopardizing market competition? How can the authorities encourage privatization while minimizing the adverse effects on social stability from structural unemployment? How can the increasing regional disparity be effectively controlled without stunting the development of coastal regions? What macro-economic policies will allow China to address internal demands and tensions while remaining a responsible and respectable player in the international market? And what should be the proper balance between prosperity and environmental preservation? The need for careful planning has never been more pressing, as small decisions made in domestic policies may lead to significant repercussions in the international arena in an increasingly integrated world economy.

Harvard China Review's seventh annual conference brings together top policy makers, business leaders, and academics to discuss these issues in depth. Discussion is broken down in to the following panels:

  1. Plenary Panel: Walking a Tightrope
  2. Poised Amidst the Gold Rush: Finance in Today's China
  3. Growing Pains: China's Social System Reform
  4. Disparity Hurts: Regional Balance in the Chinese Economy
  5. A Problem with a Cure: China's Health Care System in the Market Economy
  6. Adventurers' Paradise: Capture the Lion's Share of the Chinese Market
  7. Blueprint of the Future: Mapping China's Securities Industry and Stock Markets
